I am the winner of the National 'Local Poem' competition run by United Press Ltd in London.  I was presented with a framed certificate and a cheque for £1000.

The managing director of United Press, Peter Quinn came to Sheffield with his wife Carole Quinn who presented me with the award and cheque.

The presentation was held at the Sheffield Central Library on Monday 31st January 2011 at 12 noon.  The photographer came from the Sheffield Telegraph and Star and the article appeared in the Star on Friday 4th February 2011.

I was totally amazed when I found out I had won the competion and that my winning poem 'Home sweet home - Loxley Valley' had been chosen from the many thousands of entries.

On Friday the 4th February 2011, A reporter from the Sheffield Telegraph and Star came to where I work at the Sheffield Community Equipment Loan Service (SCELS) and recorded a video of me reciting my poem.  The video was published on the Sheffield Star website.

As a poet living in Loxley Valley in Sheffield England, it is natural for me to write poetry about the local dialect and the local area where I live.  I write my poetry to entertain people in verse.

I have lived in Sheffield all my life and my roots are firmly set here.  I have a partner Sandy who lives with me and we are having a blessing in August which we are both looking forward to.

I work full time for the NHS in Quality Management and that takes up most of my time but I love to write when I can.

I write my poems in rhyme, sometimes my poems are funny sometimes they are sad, but I try to put my thoughts and feelings across to the people who read them.

I have had many poems published in anthologies over the years, but recently I have had a book published called ‘Expressions of Life’ which includes over fifty of my own poems.  I hope to get some reviews and feedback from this article.

I own the copyright to my book so I can re-publish without having to get permission from my publishers.

My book has an ISBN no. 978-1-84436-824-2 - my book can be ordered from the British Library.  Anyone wishing to purchase a book can contact me via email:

I have recently joined freado, a site that allows authors to display extracts from thier books and helps to advertise their work.  I found this site to be very helpful.

Anyone wishing to see the extracts from my book can access it by following the link below.
